Chronic Health Conditions

Chronic health conditions are common among people 65 years or more.  They are generally incurable and, when severe enough, may reduce a person’s ability to function independently in the community or in an independent home environment.  Depending on the severity of the condition, many of these conditions can be effectively managed with good medical care combined with lifestyle modifications.

In 2005-2006, people who participated in the National Health Interview Survey commented on their health status.  The people interviewed were civilians who lived in households, not military personnel or those who were living in an institution such as a nursing home, psychiatric facility, or hospital.  The interviews were in-person and were conducted in the person’s home.  Every state is included and the surveyors attempt to interview people from all ethnic groups and income categories.

Among those 65 years or more, over half of the people reported high blood pressure (53.3%) and about half reported having arthritis (49.5%).  Almost a third reported some type of heart disease (30.9%) and a fifth (20.1%) reported some form of cancer.  Diabetes was reported by 18%.  About 10% reported asthma, bronchitis or emphysema, or having had a stroke.

Men and women reported similar levels of most of these conditions but differed in their reports of heart disease, cancer, and arthritis.  Men reported higher levels of heart disease and cancer while women reported higher levels of arthritis.

People with these chronic health conditions can live full, rich, independent lives despite having to deal with these added medical concerns.  After surgery or in-hospital medical treatments, your physician may be able to adjust your medications to reduce and limit many fo the effects of these conditions or diseases.  Finally, an in-home assessment, implementation of some environmental changes, and a structured activity program may help maintain or improve your current health status and independence.
