Signs of Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging.  It’s a form of dementia associated with memory loss.  Specific biological changes occur in the brain that may progress.  The Alzheimer’s Association publishes a well-written checklist of 10 signs of Alzheimer’s Disease.  Reviewing and understanding these signs is critical for the early detection of Alzheimer’s Disease.  Importantly, the Alzheimer’s Association includes a contrasting description of normal aging called “What’s typical?” with each of the 10 signs.

The 10 signs of Alzheimer’s Disease are:

1. Memory changes that disrupt daily life.

2. Challenges in planning or solving problems.

3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work or at leisure.

4. Confusion with time or place.

5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships.

6. New problems with words in speaking or writing.

7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps.

8. Decreased or poor judgment.

9. Withdrawal from work or social activities

10. Changes in mood and personality.

If you have questions or concerns after checking this list and understanding what is normal for people as they age, please consider consulting a physician.  Management of the disease and planning for the most active and rewarding lifestyle in the future is more effective with an early start.   Dignity Care Consulting is available to help you plan an active and rewarding lifestyle for yourself and your family member.
